What do the 12 houses in your birth chart mean?

We are influenced by the planetary energies in our solar system. Each planet holds its own distinctive energy. Based on the planetary energy — like Jupiter being associated with wealth and money — these planets can have more or less power over different areas of our life.

Each of the 12 zodiac signs originates from the star constellations that follow the pathway the sun travels over the course of a year. Your birthday represents when the sun is traveling through your zodiac sign.

To better understand the energetic impact the zodiac star constellations have upon us, we assign personality traits to them — like Sagittarius being adventurous.

In astrology to make a “house” you combine a ruling planet and a zodiac sign.

Formula: ruling planet + a zodiac sign = a house

The ruling planet is the overall energy of a house and the zodiac sign is how that energy will be expressed.

For a visualization of what this looks like you can have a family living in the same house. You will have a person who is head of the household — like a ruling planet — who has a particular energy. And depending on this person’s energy or vibration, the rest of the family members personalities will be expressed differently because of it — like a zodiac sign.

The First House (Mars + Aries)

  • Self
  • Individuality
  • Energy
  • Goals
  • Deepest desires

Following the first sign of the zodiac, the energetic combination of Mars and Aries creates the first house.

The first house is known as The House of Self. Mars brings the energy of desire, action and passion. Aries expresses itself as motivation and self-determination.

The first house is all about how we feel about our place in society and how that will shape who we will become in life. Questions like ‘who am I?’ and ‘what will I become?’ reside here.

The first house creates our lessons in life that shape our personality and that create our view of the world.
